The Temples of Angkor – Sala Lodges Siem Reap 2019 – GOLD TAILOR MADE

SIEM REAP – Sala Lodges 5 night stay.

The temples of Angkor are the highlight of anytime in the Indochina region and we have teamed this fabulous experience with a stay at the unique Sala Lodges in Siem Reap. Sala Lodges is more than a hotel, offering you a unique, authentic experience. The traditional relocated wooden houses on stilts in this “idyllic village”  are situated 8 km from the architectural site of Angkor. By choosing existing Khmer houses as your stay at Sala Lodges it allows you to delve into a genuine Cambodian world.

Your time at Sala lodges is only the beginning of your Angkor experience, we have included explorations of Angkor Wat,  Ankor Thom and The Bayon Temple with time to experience the unforgettable 360 degree painting at the Panorama museum. You will get close and personal with Khmer life at a local farm and cooking class followed by some serene time at the “Pink ladies temple” of Bateay Srei.  The floating houses on Tonle Sap lake will take your gaze in the morning and you will be enthralled at the evening Phare Circus performance. A  bonus inclusion is time for you to appreciate Kulen Mountain, said to be the birthplace of Khmer. When your five night Angkor indulgence comes to an end you will be saddened to think your time in this wonderous land is over, but happy that you have included so much during your time in Cambodia.

Continue to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city. This 12th-century masterpiece is a study in grandeur, its exterior gallery walls featuring extensive, superb bas-reliefs, particularly the East and South Galleries. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-visits as they are both known for their intricate bas-reliefs. After a short relaxing break, continue to visit Ta Prohm Temple, unlike most other Angkor temples, has been left just it was when rediscovered: a photogenic and atmospheric maze of trees growing out of temple ruins amidst jungle surroundings, making it one of Angkor’s most popular temples with visitors.

Later this afternoon, you will explore Angkor Wat, easily the most famous and best-preserved of all temples within the Angkor complex. It is a massive three-tiered structure crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. The centerpiece of any visit to the temples around Siem Reap, Angkor offers many iconic sights for amazing pictures.

Your Destination Journeys bonus: End of your day of temple exploration with a visit to the  Angkor Panorama Museum, known for its panoramic painting.

  •  Khmer Cookery, eco tree planting and Banteay Seri Temple tour.

This morning, depart to Bong Thom Homestay and enjoy a half day Cooking Class. Your course begins with a guided trip to the local market to learn about Cambodian vegetables, herbs, spices, and other ingredients and their uses in Khmer cuisine. Next, you will be shown how to prepare these delicious dishes. The hands-on experience is a great way to learn about the cuisine, similar to Thai cuisine but less spicy. At the end of our course, indulge in a lunch of your own preparations.

From here, Join hands with an effort to support reforestation progress in Cambodia by planting a tree. It may be a jackfruit or mango tree, which will later help both carbon offsetting and directly benefiting the local community.

Later this afternoon, travel to the “gem” of the Angkor area, the pretty temple of Banteay Srei, the so-called “Citadel of the Women” remains the best-preserved temple in Cambodia. It displays some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art as this small temple is noted for its truly remarkable fine bas-reliefs. Banteay Srei is unique in that it is constructed of pink sandstone, which is seen nowhere else in Angkor. We know you will enjoy your peaceful time exploring Banteay Srei.

On the way back, you will have the possibility to stop at local communities along the way and your guide will help you to interact with the local community to learn about the way of life here. Seize the opportunity to taste Palm Wine and Palm Sugar (seasonal) and other popular local produce

  • Morning floating villages tour on Tonle Sap lake

In the morning, depart on an interesting boat trip on Tonlé Sap, where you will have the opportunity to learn about life on the lake. Tonlé Sap is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake with its size varying greatly depending on the season, about four times larger during the wet season. Board a local boat and visit the village of Kampong Kleang, where only a few tourists venture. Embark on a boat ride through the village where the fisherman and their families live in stilted houses among the petrified mangrove forests and waterways. Enjoy the fascinating scenery of Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake. (Depending in the season an alternative floating village at Chong Kneas will be arranged instead).Free time to explore Siem Reap’s colorful markets and visit Artisans d’Angkor, established in 1992 in order to support Cambodian arts and crafts, and discover how wood and stone carvings, lacquering, gilding, and silk paintings are created.

  • Evening Phare Cambodian Circus performance

This evening enjoy a special treat with a performance from PHARE. The Cambodian Circus has long been famous for their performances, and this NGO teaching street kids to become circus artists is a regular at international circus conventions worldwide. Enjoy their interpretations of modern life and issues in Cambodian society

  • Bonus tour to Kulen Mountain

Kulen Mountain (Phnom Kulen) is an impressive sandstone plateau in this otherwise flat area. The mountain is considered the birthplace of the Khmer empire and a sacred place for the Khmer. At the top of Phnom Kulen, discover stone carvings in a riverbed, a large reclining Buddha from the 16th century, and several hidden pagodas.

After a nice climb, you’ll arrive at Pagoda overlooking the valley below.  This place is special for Khmers because of the fresh spring water rising up through the pagoda itself.  After a brief visit, continue trekking through a jungle path until you reach a very popular spot: The Kulen Waterfalls. Stop here and swim. Next, continue your trek to reach the Big Buddha, which is a famous religious site where the budda is carved out the actual mountaintop.
